Chance patterns and controlled chaos: Learn the basic principles of the 3 types of traditional marbling: suminagashi, ebru and oil marbling as well as how they interconnect symbolically, culturally and historically, from this poetic art’s most ancient origins through its transformation via the Silk Road. Once a tightly guarded secret, this relaxing and contemplative craft invites you to bring order into chaos, like capturing the universe on a page. We manipulate the beautiful swirling colours floating on the surface of the water with specialist tools and brushes, fans and even our own breath. We dive into the philosophy of flow and spontaneity and finally we will look at how to use our marbled papers in the book arts and beyond. This is an Elementary-level course which equally suits advanced practitioners since marbling is such a flexible art. Suitable for beginners and all ages 18+. No previous experience is necessary and all courses work equally well as standalone courses that can be taken individually. This course complements the set of 5 courses which we recommend to gain a thorough grounding in miniature painting. For non-London-based students we are also able to provide accommodation.
