Service Description

Mamluk cards are a precursor to our modern playing cards. They had 4 suits of coins, cups, polo sticks and swords and 52 cards in total. They had links with ganjifa (Indian and Islamic playing cards) and Chinese cards. In contrast to the Tarot cards earlier these Mamluk cards are all highly stylised. In the series of these classes this is an important step in understanding (playing) card design (back and front) as a whole. From figuration to stylisation and abstraction, we then move to a blend of both in upcoming classes. Pair this with the Playing Cards class later.
