Protective Magic Make a yantra, make an amulet. A yantra is a basic mandala. It is a geometric diagram and we will start with the Sri Yantra, designed to show the totality of creation and existence along with our own unity with the cosmos. We will paint these as images and also make some as objects. We will not be tattooing these onto our own arms. We will need copper plates and optionally some oil paints. We can also inscribe some on special stones or pebbles. We will use chalk and fixative and aim to investigate yantra forms in wood, weaving or cross stitch and perhaps even crystal. What is the difference between talismans and amulets? I can’t find a definitive answer to this and they seem to be interchangeable. Etymologically talismans do have an Arabic root طِلَسْم; ‘amulet’ has obscure origins. Talismans seem to be protective and for good fortune, can be on paper and may need to be charged and amulets seem to protect against, are smaller, have inherent magical protection on their own and are made of a hard substance like stone or metal, but also can be made of paper. That is to say: amulets exist on their own as magical devices and have their own inherent power but talismans need to be imbued or charged before they are effective. Or it might be the other way round!
