Scintillating Cintamani The last strange and uncharted territory in our breakdown of the carpet page, margins and illumination is the çintamani. This mythic and mysterious symbol (meaning ‘magic jewel’) is not only found in illumination. It is found on royal caftans, ceramics, carpets, physical stones, sculptures and paintings. It is found across Asia and in many different cultural contexts (see the upcoming Book of Mushrooms). Only the sultans in the Ottoman era were allowed to wear it. Is it based on animal skin? Is it the basis for hand drawn clouds? Who knows… Study it, paint it and may all your wishes be fulfilled.
