Service Description

UCL lights up its pillars in rainbow colours at night and it’s always a pleasure to walk past them. Emma Willard's 1846 Temple of Time is an example of the memory palace technique applied to historical dates. What do we hold dear? What is important to us? Make a list of 101 important things (you can do 1001 if you like, and contact me if you manage this feat!) and we’ll turn them into memory pillars. Many of your pillars will be stone, brick, clay and wood but maybe some of your pillars are made of glass. Or possibly even wax, like pillar candles. What does that mean? Our painted pillars can be figurative or abstract and inspired by colourful columns from around the world: South Indian temple pillars, the Catalan Palau de la Música and many more. This class - or at least the 101 Important Things exercise which you can do at any time by yourself - is usefully paired with the upcoming Oracles class.
