ISLAMIC BOOKBINDING: Safavid Persian Co-taught by Patrik and Vaishali Prazmari The Islamic Book Covers series (Safavid Persian, Mughal Indian, Ottoman Turkish, North African, Arabic) aims to teach a comprehensive introduction to Islamic bookbinding. In this class we will be making an A6 book with Islamic binding techniques including the iconic envelope flap that is the hallmark of Islamic book design. This is a book you can hold in your hands and cherish. Use it as a notebook, sketchbook or journal. If you would like to explore the inside of an Islamic manuscript further, choose another class either online or in-person taught by Vaishali Prazmari in the art of Indian and Persian miniature manuscript painting: https://www.vaishaliprazmariteaching.com Saturdays: 5, 12, 19, 26 October 2024 10.30am - 4pm We have just opened up our studio in Kensal Green. Address details and a confirmation email will be sent upon booking. Day 1: Make book block model, templates and cut leather Day 2: Paring, skiving leather, glueing and stamping outer cover Day 3: Glueing inner cover, putting everything together Day 4: Finishing, limning and introduction to gold painting £350 Minimum 4 students Additional charge of £40 for specially prepared leather for the class* All other materials and equipment provided *The reason for this is to mimic the finesse and thin leather of the Islamic manuscripts of the past we have studied. Many people nowadays do not bother with this step but we have pre-prepared the leather for you so that it is the exact requirements for the class. You can purchase from us on the first day. You will feel the difference. We require this thin leather so that the edges are fine and fit together perfectly, otherwise the leather will look bulkier and not as elegant. Patrik is a master craftsman and one of his specialist trademarks is fine folding of leather corners.
