Service Description

A Peepshow book at last - this book combines elements of bookmaking and the toy theatre in one go. Peepshows were also known as tunnel books and were a precursor to the toy theatre. The V&A has the world's largest collection of these (Victorians loved them) and we will make ours with paper. Any paper will do as long as it's not too thin, so ideally 150gsm+. The Tutinama, or Tales of the Parrot, are a kind of reverse 1001 Nights. The Cleveland Tutinama manuscript has fantastic illustrations from which we'll take inspiration in class. Reds, canary yellows and pinks abound. The parrot narrates a tale to stop a wife committing adultery while her husband is away. Although moralistic, this is also a celebratory book on the agency and sexuality of women and women (and men) having fun (sometimes poking fun at men). Class includes a bespoke handmade leather cover to paint and free postage to anywhere in the world. Sent separately depending on production schedules. Make your own library of handmade Islamic style books!
