Paint a snowy wintry tree with white blossoms as well as a very special Chinese tradition, a tree that is also a calendar! This is a lesser known tradition in the deep midwinter, starting in December, where you paint one petal of a plum blossom per day for 81 days, by which point it will be spring. It's called the festival of nine nines (9 x 9 = 81) and called the Dongzhi festival. We'll discuss more about this ancient calendrical tradition in class. We focus on a series of trees designed to explore the breadth and depth of trees in Indo-Persian and manuscript painting.
